STOP! is a set of aluminium bookends that play on the idea of having a simple heavy object to stop! your books falling over. The circular disk protrudes out from the aluminium block as a surface for the books to rest on, like a hand would stick out to stop something from falling.

The artists creative process always begins with research of forms, materials, and construction methods. Sometimes the piece is dictated by sketches or in this case, come about by playing with the material, balancing forms, testing scale and experimenting with functionality.

"For this design I wanted to come up with a simple product the didn’t involve any welding or gluing. Something that could be produced in a few different colour combinations. I wanted to keep the forms very minimal to let the material as well a the screw detail speaks. Offsetting the circular disk and colouring the screw adds a playful feeling to an otherwise very simple object."

The manufacturing technique were reasonably simple. The aluminium disk was cut by a cnc with a counter sunk hole made in the centre. From there the artist drilled and tapped a hole in the aluminium block, sanded and then screwed the two aluminium pieces together. The piece is designed to be packaged as three parts the block, disc and screw for the end user to assemble it once unpacked.

Sean Brickhill is a Melbourne-based furniture designer whose practice explores the intersection of function, form, and materiality. While his pieces are fully functional, Brickhill prioritises sculptural clarity and the inherent qualities of materials, allowing structure, surface, and proportion to define each design.

Influenced by minimalism and architectural principles, his work often distills furniture to its essential elements, emphasizing balance, restraint, and honest construction. Through a considered approach to scale and detail, Brickhill creates objects that sit between furniture and sculpture—quietly expressive, purposeful, and enduring.

Working from his Melbourne studio, Sean Brickhill continues to develop a body of work that reflects a thoughtful dialogue between utility and form, inviting users to engage with furniture as both a functional object and a spatial presence.
