Bloc Bookends

Bel Williams

Bloc Bookends

$880.00 AUD

The Bloc Bookends explore the relationship between weight, balance and geometry. Crafted from solid aluminium, alternating cylindrical and square forms create a simple yet tactile composition. Designed to be rotated and reconfigured, the bookends offer flexibility in their arrangement, allowing the composition to shift and evolve on the shelf. A hand-drawn metal finish introduces subtle surface texture, celebrating the softness and workability of aluminium.

Part of BOOKENDS (2026), an exhibition curated and presented by Pépite Gallery.

Shipping Note: This work will be shipped once the exhibition concludes after November 23rd.

More About This Work

The artist began her process by thinking about function as the foundation of the piece and understanding what is a non-negotionable and where there's more room to play and experiment. Williams' has a reference library catalogued by material, and uses this as a prompt for how her chosen medium can be pushed or manipulated. Usually she will go from sketching to 3D modelling and establish the workability. For larger pieces, she prefers to rough out the portions at scale to interact with and see how it feels. Willaims' will often lean towards forms that explore balance and weight so this is important part of the process.

Lately the artist has been taking a hand led approach, heading straight into the workshop and sculpting in realtime to figure things out, but also just trusting in the process. "Sometimes I get really stuck but find through constantly showing up I'm able to work through it. Sometimes you have to get the bad ideas out onto paper to make room for the magic."

Williams started the process of these works by thinking about ideas of weight. For years she has been assembling bookends from material fragments around the studio, including heavy, rugged offcuts of basalt, travertine or other salvaged stone. Recently, through working on her Bloc lights series, William's was introduced to solid aluminium offcuts.

"I'm really drawn to their elemental shapes, there is something really satisfying about holding these in your hands, the simple geometry and the weight. With the Bloc bookends I've continued playing with alternating cylindrical and square shapes. I like the idea that they can be orientated and played with on the shelf, there is no set configuration, so they can be rotated and changed as a shifting composition.

A new material finish I've been exploring is metal drawing, a freehand mark-making on the surface. I've found due to the softness of aluminium you can bring up a really beautiful texture. I've also been exploring it in another new wall mounted mirror work in stainless steel which has made me really appreciate how workable aluminium is, it cuts like butter!"
