Earth Cloud/Rain Wedge consists of two contrasting ceramic ‘ends’. One is hollow, voluminous and process marked, the other is a perforated mass of repeated parts joined haphazardly.

For Dawn Vachon, the two-part nature of a bookend set presented an interesting opportunity to explore what might complement her familiar cloud-like forms. This led to a pairing of contrasting shapes and surfaces, bringing together a soft, organic form and a more structured, geometric counterpart.

The cloud-like piece was created using a combination of coiling and pinching, then fired unglazed. During firing, it picked up traces of volatilised glaze from a nearby piece, adding an unexpected surface effect. Its counterpart, a wedge-shaped form, was made by creating numerous small clay logs with rounded ends, coating them in slip and dropping them into a cardboard mould. This piece was then finished with a thick layer of glaze, creating a striking contrast between the two forms.

Dawn Vachon studied visual arts at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, receiving her BFA in 2008. Since relocating to Naarm/Melbourne, she has continued a ceramic practice spanning functional, decorative and sculptural avenues.

Dawn can often be found hand-building, throwing and concocting glazes at her home-studio in Coburg.
