'It Should Be Fine' Bookends

Alterfact

'It Should Be Fine' Bookends

$2,500.00 AUD

Playing with balance and form, 'It Should Be Fine' is a stack of multiple 3D prints, fused together with glaze and recycled brass dust collected from metal fabrication processes.

Moving away from the familiar order and verticality of book stacks, 'It Should Be Fine' embraces a sense of chaos and precarious balance. Each element rests against another, creating what feels like a fragile structure. The work explores the uncertainty of stability, suggesting that even when things appear unstable, they can somehow support heavy weight.

Part of BOOKENDS (2026), an exhibition curated and presented by Pépite Gallery.

Shipping Note: This work will be shipped once the exhibition concludes after November 23rd.

More About This Work

Lucile Sciallano’s process shifts between careful planning and spontaneous experimentation. While she sometimes begins with drawings and considers colours, clays and glazes, she also embraces chance and happy accidents. Working with clay 3D printing, she experiments with the medium’s constraints by stacking prints, using wet clay and allowing forms to collapse. Her practice is driven by curiosity, continuous learning and an openness to the possibilities of the material.

It Should Be Fine continues Sciallano’s two-year research into stacking and fusing clay prints to create trophy-like forms. By combining different clays, glazes, hand-built and printed elements, she explores how objects respond to weight during firing. This process also allows her to experiment with larger scales and more complex compositions. She began by drawing and designing forms in different scales, proportions and volumes, printing and arranging them to find the right composition. After firing the elements separately, delays arose when her kiln, Gertrude, needed a break. She then stacked the forms for a final firing, using glaze to fuse them together and incorporating brass dust gifted by a metal fabricator.

More About Alterfact

Lucile Sciallano and Ben Landau (1985 - 2022) co-founded Alterfact studio in 2014 with the goal of merging new technology and tradition through 3D printed ceramics.

Working with open source 3D clay printers that they have built and modified themselves, Alterfact studio creates and experiments with the possibilities of this contemporary technique. Their work explores the space between handmade and mass manufactured form and the influence of digital technology on craft practice.

Spanning art, craft and design, Alterfact’s transdisciplinary practice pushes the boundaries of plastic-based 3D printing and plays with the capacities of clay to form intricate design and effects, borrowing inspiration from textiles, fibre arts, tapestry and basketry.

Lucile and Ben met and trained at the prestigious Design Academy in Eindhoven, Netherlands before moving to Australia together in 2013. Their work has been shown nationally and internationally including at the National Gallery of Australia and Melbourne Design Week (solo exhibitions), Powerhouse Museum, Australian Tapestry Workshop, Newcastle Art Gallery, Jam Factory and Shepparton Art Museum and Gyeonggi International Ceramics Biennial in Korea. Alterfact pieces are part of numerous private and museum collections including Schallaburg Art Museum in Austria, the Korea Ceramic Foundation, National Gallery of Victoria and the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences in Sydney.
