ALTERFACT is an experimental design studio created by Lucile Sciallano and Ben Landau in 2014. Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2013, Lucile and Ben have worked in tandem on various projects in different mediums. Their collaboration has culminated in the creation of Alterfact Studio, a platform through which to conduct critical research with materials and data translated through the manufacture of ‘stuff’.

Alterfact’s practice is currently focused on the use of 3D printing in clay as a small batch manufacturing process. They push the boundaries of this traditionally plastic-based medium, and play with its connotations of utilitarianism and gimmickry, as it moves into a feasible reality.

'Block' Sculpture

Regular price $180.00
/
Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.
OBJECT TYPE:
Sculpture
MATERIALS:
Porcelain (With added materials), Oxide, Glaze
DIMENSIONS:
90mm x 80mm
ORIGIN:
Naarm - Melbourne

These handbuilt and wheel-manipulated porcelain plates, slabs, and vessels are infused with added materials that introduce organic imperfections to each form. Inspired by a study of Japanese artist Atsushi Ogata—featured in UTSUWA: The Beauty Within—the work explores surface through a custom-developed crackle slip, enhanced with oxide and finished with a light-diffusing glaze. Though sculptural in nature, each piece retains a quiet functionality—designed to hold, be held, or simply to be admired.

Due to the nature of handmade objects, photos are only indicative as each piece varies slightly in size, shape and colour.

Please choose your pieces carefully as all purchases at pépite are final.

PAULINE MEADE has been using clay as her chosen medium since completing a Diploma of Ceramics in 2007, continuing to extend her practice at School of Clay and Art ( SOCA).

Pauline has been exhibiting her work in Melbourne and was a finalist in Clune's Ceramic Award where she won a judges' recognition and the People's Choice award.
Pauline predominantly hand builds, as well as using the wheel to enhance her pieces, emphasising texture and layering of glazes. It's the dry sclerophyll bush, wild wattle and ironbark forests that continue to inform her work, the landscape from her childhood.

DAVID AUSTIN is a New Zealand-based artist of Māori descent. Largely self-taught, his work draws inspiration from mid-century Nordic design and the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi—the appreciation of imperfection, impermanence, and the natural cycle of growth and decay.

David primarily works with low-firing techniques, beginning with a bisque firing before exposing each piece to intense heat and smoke. This process results in richly textured surfaces, with no two pieces ever the same.

“Like me, my work is imperfect—cracked, chipped, with uneven glazes. There is beauty in that. Each piece is hand-built with intention, speaking in a quiet, intimate language. I hope it speaks to you.”

From her small studio in the Dandenong Ranges, MELINDA WALLIS strives for beauty in the form and surface. Simple designs can prove challenging, however this keeps her engaged as she continues to search for that one perfect piece... that enigma. She uses textured clays, often blending two or three together. The wheel gives Melinda the individual parts, and her hands assemble the finished product. The process is by far the main event for Melinda, the work is a bonus.
