Tao Delves' practice began through drawing, and it was through studying Fine Art, majoring in Ceramics and taking sculptural classes that she became interested in the relationship between painting, clay and three-dimensional form. Delves is interested in the way the surface of an object can become an extension of a painting, allowing the painted mark to move around a three-dimensional form. Working primarily with stoneware clay, she paints directly onto the surface or carves into the clay. Delves is inspired by outsider art, ancient artefacts and Neolithic markings, particularly their raw, spontaneous and intuitive qualities. Her work draws on allegorical symbolism and Western imagery, particularly cowboys, as expressions of freedom and escape. Through fluid linework and expressive marks, she explores memory, time and materiality.
