'These recent works have been the outcome of my explorations of my new surroundings in the Victorian Goldfields and I have used materials from various disused mining sites and processed them to use as oxides, slips and glazes, as well as incorporating rocks and clay into the clay body.  The making of this new work has required a deeper engagement, not only with my surroundings but also with my own making practice.’ - Laura Veleff

LAURA VELEFF has been making ceramic work for her label LEAF AND THREAD for the past 9 years. Laura works predominantly on the wheel and creates pieces that are imbued with her deep respect and love for natural materials.

Since moving from Melbourne to the Central Victorian Goldfields, Laura's more recent work tells the story of the complex narrative and history of her new surroundings, often incorporating materials she gathers from the environment.

ALTERFACT is an experimental design studio created by Lucile Sciallano and Ben Landau in 2014. Since graduating from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2013, Lucile and Ben have worked in tandem on various projects in different mediums. Their collaboration has culminated in the creation of Alterfact Studio, a platform through which to conduct critical research with materials and data translated through the manufacture of ‘stuff’.

Alterfact’s practice is currently focused on the use of 3D printing in clay as a small batch manufacturing process. They push the boundaries of this traditionally plastic-based medium, and play with its connotations of utilitarianism and gimmickry, as it moves into a feasible reality.

Tatt’s interest in New Materialist theories informs the technique of assembling multiple porcelain tesserae or cut and refined ceramic tiles. The physicality of individual assemblage of tesserae creates abstract forms of balance and precarity, layers, stacks, pattern and negative spaces. Using hyper focusing as a perceptive and making strategy, concentrating on the individual tesserae tile, Tatts considers their relationship and action with other objects and the surrounding environment. In late childhood Tatts was diagnosed with apophenia, a condition where the brain has the inclination to perceive patterns and connection in everyday object. Tatts has continued to develop not only technique but the action of evoking story and kinship between medium, artist and viewer.

TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PIECE:
As part of the handmade process and the experimental nature of Anna Parsons' practice, 'imperfections' are to be expected in her works - these may present as cracks or chips and will be pictured in the photos.

ANNA PARSONS is a ceramicist, working intuitively, finding clay as a receptive medium to express herself. Anna often incorporates additions such as volcanic rock from the bush around where she lives. Anna's practice took many years of experimentation of temperature and clay body to get these results - she fires her work numerous times, sometimes up to 5 firings to get the desired effects. Anna majored in sculpture at  BA Sydney College of the Arts and now lives in Rosebank, NSW.

Clay receives me

 Suitable for holding water.

From her small studio in the Dandenong Ranges, MELINDA WALLIS strives for beauty in the form and surface. Simple designs can prove challenging, however this keeps her engaged as she continues to search for that one perfect piece... that enigma. She uses textured clays, often blending two or three together. The wheel gives Melinda the individual parts, and her hands assemble the finished product. The process is by far the main event for Melinda, the work is a bonus.

Living and working in France, MATHIEU FROSSARD's work stands somewhere between art, design and craft. Looking at these practices from a distance, Mathieu's work is a collage of aesthetic references, shapes and materials that blur boundaries and offer multiple paths for the viewer to apprehend his work.

Giving viewers visual references, Mathieu pushes them to confront their own imaginative faculties, inviting them to interpret these as their own and to create stories based on what they see. Mathieu graduated in art and design from ESAD in Rheims, France, and from the Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
