'These recent works have been the outcome of my explorations of my new surroundings in the Victorian Goldfields and I have used materials from various disused mining sites and processed them to use as oxides, slips and glazes, as well as incorporating rocks and clay into the clay body.  The making of this new work has required a deeper engagement, not only with my surroundings but also with my own making practice.’ - Laura Veleff

Tatt’s interest in New Materialist theories informs the technique of assembling multiple porcelain tesserae or cut and refined ceramic tiles. The physicality of individual assemblage of tesserae creates abstract forms of balance and precarity, layers, stacks, pattern and negative spaces. Using hyper focusing as a perceptive and making strategy, concentrating on the individual tesserae tile she considers their relationship and action with other objects and the surrounding environment.

In late childhood Tatts was diagnosed with apophenia, a condition where the brain has the inclination to perceive patterns and connection in everyday object. Tatts has continued to develop not only technique but the action of evoking story and kinship between medium, artist and viewer.

OBJECT TYPE:
Vessel
MATERIALS:
Clay
DIMENSIONS:
350 mm x 330 mm diameter
ORIGIN:
Wamboin, NSW

Not suitable for holding water.

OBJECTS OF VIRTUE is the ceramic studio of Australian artist David Suckling.

David SUCKLING is fascinated by the interpretation of natural forms throughout the history of art and architecture, and aim to interpret his own familiar environment within this tradition. In his travels outside of Australia David studied the patterns on ritual objects of early cultures as well as the sophisticated surfaces of European architecture. All bear signature marks of their makers and designers.

David wanted to apply this type of action to his own objects, combining evidence of human interpretation with repetitive action. Hours spent kayaking the estuaries of the south coast of NSW, exploring the intertidal zones of mangroves and oyster beds, allow David to observe and consider ways of expressing the affinity he feels with this place. The physical immersion in the textures of these zones is translated through the physicality of hand building, and the motifs retain the evidence of his hands and fingers.

TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PIECE:
As part of the handmade process and the experimental nature of Anna Parsons' practice, 'imperfections' are to be expected in her works - these may present as cracks or chips and will be pictured in the photos.

ANNA PARSONS is a ceramicist, working intuitively, finding clay as a receptive medium to express herself. Anna often incorporates additions such as volcanic rock from the bush around where she lives. Anna's practice took many years of experimentation of temperature and clay body to get these results - she fires her work numerous times, sometimes up to 5 firings to get the desired effects. Anna majored in sculpture at  BA Sydney College of the Arts and now lives in Rosebank, NSW.

Clay receives me

Weaving instinctively

Bouncing Off

My inner psychology

Materiality, chemistry, bodily

I cast shadows

Text by Anna Parsons.
